What do I need to get a card?

In order to obtain an ACLS library card, you must present identification with your name and current address to any branch.  A picture ID is preferred.  In lieu of a picture ID, two (2) items with your name and address should be provided.  Acceptable items would include mail postmarked within the last 30 days; a recent utility bill; lease agreement; checkbook/bank statements; or legal correspondence from government agencies or schools or universities

Library Borrowing Policies

What is Allegany County One Card?

Allegany County Library System, the Donald Alexander Library of Allegany College of Maryland, and the Lewis J. Ort Library of Frostburg State University have partnered so that your library card can be used to borrow materials from any library in Allegany County, public or academic.  One library card is all that you need to borrow thousands of library materials across Allegany County.  Simply present the library card you already have in your wallet when registering as a library patron.

What is a STAR Card?

Allegany County Library System, Allegany County Public Schools, Bishop Walsh and Calvary Christian Academy have partnered so that every student has a virtual library card based on their student ID number.  Students can visit any branch of the library, select up to three books or audiobooks, and provide their name or student ID number to the librarian to check out.  Students can also check out ebooks and eaudiobooks and use library online resources with their STAR Card.

Bring Your Library Card Every Trip!

Your Allegany County Library card may be used at any public library in Maryland.  The card allows you to borrow material at the checkout desk.  The library card must be presented to borrow material.

How long may I borrow materials?

Most ACLS materials circulate for 21 days.  Movies and Video Games are loaned for 7 days.  Bestselling items or items with 10 or more holds circulate for 14 days.  Also, some materials are not renewable.  There is a limit of 6 movie checkouts per card and 4 Video Game checkouts per card.  The maximum number of checkouts per library card is 50 items.

Returning library material:

ACLS material may be returned at any location.  We provide 24/7 return for your convenience, with book drops available adjacent to each building or externally.  Material borrowed through ACLS from another agency through Interlibrary Loan should be returned to ACLS.  Otherwise, most material checked out from a Maryland public library may be returned to any public library in the state.

What if I lose my card?

A lost card can be replaced for $1.00.  For your protection, please report a lost or stolen card immediately.  Remember--you are responsible for the security of your library card, and for all library materials check out on your card.  Parents/Guardians are responsible for all material borrowed on their child's library card.  There is a charge for overdue or lost or damaged material.

How we contact you:

Allegany County Library System is responsible for the maintenance of the collection, supported from public funds for everyone's enjoyment.  As a patron of ACLS, you are responsible for returning your materials on time.  The library will notify you with an email a day before material is due, and by email or postal mail when it is overdue.  Please make sure that we have your current email address and mailing address.

Patrons who do not return overdue materials promptly upon receiving the overdue notice will be billed the replacement cost for those materials.
